INTERVIEW WITH PATTI ROBERTS, AUTHOR OF "PARADOX - THE ANGELS ARE HERE"
What is it like living in Australia. I and I am sure many others have always seen the beauty of the place. Tell us about your home through your eyes.
I grew up in Darwin in the Northern Territory. So I will always have a special place in my heart for Darwin. So many wonderful childhood memories. Twenty years ago I moved to Cairns, Queensland – where the lush, tropical Daintree rainforest meets the beautiful underwater world of the Great Barrier Reef. Have you packed your bags yet??? In Cairns, winter, if you could call it that lasts for about a week. There are no white Christmases, but tropical thunderstorms that loom large with heavy black clouds ready to burst. At night the lightning stretches across the night sky as far as the eye can see. Blotting out even the brightness of the billions stars overhead. Beautiful! If you hate hot sunny days…. Un-pack your bags with the tropical storms comes the humidity. We have a saying for this particular season here in Australia… It's called the "Troppo" season!
We are giving away copies of Paradox this month, what was the inspiration behind this series of books?
Therapy. I was feeling very down and misplaced after a failed relationship and I wanted to do something positive…. I needed to do something positive. I wanted to herd up all my unresolved emotions and put them to good use. So I went out and bought a new laptop computer and started writing. Hence the reason Paradox is a dark read. A little bit EMO! Writing has been the best therapy and I have never been happier! I highly recommend writing to anyone that finds themselves in a similar situation. So to answer your question… That is how the Paradox Series was born.
Who are some of your inspirations in the writing world of today and the past?
I wasn't a big reader as a kid, which is a shame seeing as how I love it so much now. When I was in my twenties I read Kane & Able by Jeffrey Archer and I loved it. Lately I have started reading Game Of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. I watched the TV series and just had to read the books. On book 2 now, but I had to put it down to focus on finishing book 2, Progeny Of Innocence.
Out of the books you've written so far, what is your favorite and why?
There are parts that I love about book 1 and parts I really love about book 2. So I brought out a Paradox – Special Edition that has both books, so that one is now my favorite. That is cheating, I know this, but…..
Do you have another series in mind for the near future?
For now, it is Paradox the whole way. For as long as the characters have stories to tell. For as long as the reader wants to keep reading about the two worlds that personifies the Paradox Series.
If you had to choose just one of your characters as your favorite who would it be and why?
Impossible. I love so many of them equally for different reasons. OK then… currently…. Wade. I would love to have a Wade in my life
What special techniques do you have for writing?
My favorite technique is when I'm half-asleep. I think of the chapter that I am currently writing or about to write and I imagine the characters talking and what is going on around them. In particular how they react to what is being said, happening, their thoughts. I think about how it all fits in with the story as a whole. I also pay attention to what is happening around me. How I can weave real events from my life and the world around me into the story.
How do you come up with the names for your characters?
I quite often use names in part from some of the people I have met recently through Goodreads. Or people that have read my book. Sometimes I make them up because in my mind a particular name "fits" a particular character. Who knows, you may end up in one of my books…..
Your series is slated for the screen... which screen would you rather see it on, the movie screen or television and why?
Originally everyone things movie.., I think. The big screen. But you know what; I think I would prefer a TV series. You get to see so much more of your favorite characters week after week. Whereas in a movie you have a very limited time to portray the developing characters and storyline.
What is one of the most amazing things that has ever happened to you in your life besides your writing?
The unconditional love you have for your child. That is amazing!
